What is NLP, Neuro-Linguistic Programming? And how it helped me as a teacher

Who invented NLP Neuro-Linguistic Programming?

Richard Bandler and John Grinder in the 1970s, became popular in the psychoanalytic, occult and New Age worlds in the 1980s, and advertising, marketing and politics in the 1990s and 2000s. It's alsos used by people in 'the influence game' so sales people, politics, and the like. I am only interested in how I communicate with my own brain and transforming - transmuting my life for the better and the clients I work with as a holistic practictioner.

So what is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

Neuro - neurology.    Linguistic - language

Programming - how that neural language functions.

So, NLP is like learning the language of your own mind!

Let’s make this simpler with an example of wanting a cup of tea

Remember being on holidays and needing to know where you could get a decent cup of tea? But you were in proper local and native land and no one understood you? So you motion drinking a cup of tea and then everyone gets you; well This is the kind of relationship that most of us have with our own unconscious mind.

We are trying to tell it we want tea and it brings up to the farmers market!

The conscious mind is the goal setter, while the unconscious mind is the goal getter.

But until the two learn to communicate you will be parched for that cuppa and yet have cupboards full of organic local grown vegetables!

Why I started using NLP

When I come home from a day's teaching I am not hungry. And yet, I go into an almost trance and raid the cupboards and make a big meal. I can't settle for a cuppa and a biscuit or easy soup or fruit salad. Every day I feel compelled to make a big production out of dinner. And this is in spite of the fact that I ensure I eat well throughout the school day. Teaching little-ies is tough going and one needs to be fueled!

Anyway, I was talking about this lately and wondering why I cook every night. When most of the time I'm not even hungry. And the only thing I came up with is - unconscious habit.

Changing mindset and habit is my forte and so please welcome NPL.

My unconscious mind created a habit and carries it only every school day as mys mind only does that because it thinks that’s what you want.

I needed a manual and fast to tell my brain to stop. I am full already!

Neuro-Linguistic Programming is like a user’s manual for the brain

With all of this information in mind I am now delving into a very exciting course I am studying (more details later)  and what would you know... one of my modules is NLP. I have applied what I know and can already see a difference in my unconscious behaviour. I have interrupted my patterns, challenged my beliefs, and managed to remain present rather than dissociating after a long day. NLP is the bees knees.

When I am further in my course I will be taking booking online for people that need help. Stay tuned.

Stay present
